What to Keep in Your Carry-On in Case of Delay
A short packing list built for the bad version of the trip, not the good one.
Last checked: September 2026
The non-negotiables
- Medication for the whole trip, not just the flight, with prescriptions photographed
- Passport, cards, keys and any document you cannot replace abroad
- Power bank, charged, plus a cable that fits your phone
- One change of clothes and clean socks
- Glasses or contact lens supplies
The difference-makers
- Empty water bottle to fill after security
- Snack that survives being sat on
- Eye mask and earplugs, which cost little and save a night
- Toothbrush and a small deodorant
- Pen, for landing cards and claim forms
Pack the bag for the delay
If your checked bag disappeared for three days, would you be fine? That question is the whole packing list.
This is general information, not legal advice. Rules change, and every situation is different. Always check the official airline or government information for your route before acting.
