Lost Passport in Thailand: What to Do

A missing passport in Thailand involves both your consulate and Thai Immigration: report the loss, replace the document and resolve the entry record before departure.

Check accommodation, transport and beach belongings

In Thailand, a passport can go missing during a hotel check-in, a move between island accommodation and a ferry, or a day when belongings are carried to the beach. Enquire at the reception desk and with the last transport operator, describing the pouch or bag as well as the document. Keep any booking details that identify the trip concerned.

Markets, bus terminals and nightlife venues can also be confusing places to retrace a missing bag. Establish whether the passport was left somewhere or whether there are signs of theft, and describe that distinction to the police. If a business still holds your document, arrange its safe return rather than beginning a replacement based on an unchecked assumption.

Use Tourist Police help to make the local report

Thailand's Tourist Police can be reached on 1155. Ask for assistance identifying the local police station appropriate to the place where your passport disappeared and explaining your reporting needs. Tourist Police assistance does not itself issue a replacement passport or resolve immigration status; those belong to different authorities.

At the station, request a written police report or loss record, sometimes described in English as a police daily report. State whether the incident was a loss or theft and provide your name, nationality and available passport details. Retain the copy you receive and ask how the report can be located again if your consular office needs clarification.

Identify your document-issuing consular office

Your own country's embassy or consulate must advise on an emergency travel document or passport replacement in Thailand. Read its official Thailand pages to learn which office accepts your application and how to contact it. Being near a tourist destination does not establish that a local consular representative can issue the document you need.

Include your intended departure, any onward stops and the fact that the passport contained your Thai entry record. Ask how the issuing office coordinates its documentation with Thai Immigration, including whether it supplies supporting confirmation. Before travelling across the country for an appointment, confirm the application arrangements and the identification accepted on the transport you plan to use.

Resolve the entry stamp and permission to stay

Replacing the booklet does not automatically restore the Thai entry stamp or any visa information that was inside it. Contact Thai Immigration before departure to establish how your arrival record and visa or permission-to-stay status must be verified and recorded with the new document. Do not leave this enquiry until you reach the airport departure queue.

Follow Immigration's current instructions on the office to use and the evidence it requires. The police report, replacement document, available copies of the old identity and entry pages, and arrival details may be relevant, but the responsible officials determine the actual requirements. Losing a passport does not extend your permitted stay or remove immigration obligations.

Two authorities, two separate decisions

A consular travel document establishes what your government has issued for travel. Thai Immigration must still address the entry record and immigration status associated with the missing passport before you leave Thailand.

Gather evidence of both identity and arrival

  • Keep the Thai police record accessible alongside your consular case details.
  • Recover any image of the missing passport's biographical page and Thai entry stamp.
  • Record the date and place of arrival and any visa documentation you can retrieve.
  • Check the embassy's photograph rules rather than buying a standard set without instructions.

Tell both offices if your phone or all document copies were lost as well. They need an accurate account of what evidence remains, not guessed visa dates. Where an arrival or stay detail is uncertain, ask Immigration to explain the record rather than assuming it from a flight booking.

Confirm clearance and document acceptance before rebooking

Check with Thai Immigration that the required record work has been addressed, and with the issuing consulate that your replacement covers the planned journey. Your airline and any transit country's authorities also need to accept that document. For current fees, office arrangements and application progress, rely on your own embassy and official Thai government pages; no processing schedule is guaranteed here.

This is general information, not legal advice. Rules change, and every situation is different. Always check the official airline or government information for your route before acting.
