Airport Emergencies
Stuck Abroad With No Money: A Practical Plan
When cards fail, cash is gone and the flight is tomorrow, work through these options in order.

Triage
- Call your bank. Fraud blocks on foreign transactions are extremely common and are lifted in minutes.
- Try a different card and a different bank's cash machine before assuming the worst.
- Check whether your phone wallet works where the physical card does not.
- Count what you do have in local currency and decide what it must cover: food, transport to the airport, one night.
Getting help from home
A transfer from a friend or relative through a money transfer service is usually the fastest route to cash you can hold. You will need ID to collect it, which is why the passport step matters so much.
Be specific when you ask
Send the exact amount you need and what it is for. People help faster when the request is concrete.
What an embassy can and cannot do
- Can: issue emergency travel documents, contact family, give local information
- Sometimes can: arrange an emergency loan in genuine destitution, usually repayable
- Cannot: pay your hotel bill, buy your flight, or settle disputes with an airline
This is general information, not legal advice. Rules change, and every situation is different. Always check the official airline or government information for your route before acting.
